The Arc San Joaquin (The Arc) is one of 700 state and local chapters providing services and supports for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). As a member of The Arc California and The Arc US on the national, state and local level we educate and advocate for the rights of individuals with I/DD to fully participate in life and community.
The Arc began as a grassroots organization in 1954 led by parents to access services for children and adults with I/DD. This journey did not come with a clear path except to know that assertive advocacy and participation in the process of educating and communicating a clear and responsive agenda at community, local, state and national government levels was imperative. Locally, parents, civic organizations, schools, government and concerned citizens joined together to increase access to pre-school and day care, accessible education for children with high-level physical and learning needs, summer recreation, employment programs and adult life and social engagement training (adult day program).
With supports and services there is opportunity for individuals with I/DD to experience a life as full citizens. We believe that services and supports are resources to manage the effects and challenges of I/DD and when possible to remove barriers and controls to full inclusion. Services are outcome-oriented and based upon individual strengths, preferences and needs. These services are offered at The Arc:
- Supported Employment and other employment services for individuals
- Hiring resource for local employers
- Adult life skill and social engagement training (adult day program)
- Information about intellectual and developmental disabilities
